Recipe: Skullcap Tincture

Making herbal tinctures at home is an easy way to save money while still enjoying herbal medicines. Skullcap is a comforting herb traditionally used for its relaxing and sedative properties. It can be taken during times of high stress or exhaustion without being overly sedating. It is also traditionally used to treat headaches and is great as a natural sleep aid for those who have trouble winding down at the end of the day.

This tincture making technique can be used for a number of herbs, such as white willow bark, lemon balm, lavender, damiana, red raspberry leaf, and oatstraw.

Supplies Needed:

  • Clean jar

  • 80 Proof alcohol such as Vodka

  • Dried herbs

  • Labels

Instructions:

  1. Fill clean jar to about 1/3 with dried skullcap.

  2. Cover herbs with vodka, filling the jar to the top. Be sure all your plant material is completely submerged in the liquid. Screw the top on and label the jar with the plant name, and the date. Put your jar in a dark cool spot, such as the back of a cabinet. You will want to shake your jar every few days.

  3. After about 4-6 weeks, your tincture will be ready! Strain thru cheese cloth into another clean jar or jars. Label and enjoy!
